Bird hunts are a new service provided by Santa Margarita and for now are handled on a case-by-case basis. We've had great success as an independent trip and also as additions to big game hunts. Please contact us for more information and pricing.
Quail Hunts South Texas is home to one of the largest quail populations in the country. Due to good nesting cover and predator control at Santa Margarita the quail hunts have been very successful for both Bobwhites and Scaled. The state Bag Limit is 12 birds per day and most hunters fill their limits, especially if using dogs. You are encouraged and welcome to bring your own dogs. We have a trained black lab retriever who can work alongside your dogs or alone if you prefer. The quail hunts are conducted in typical south Texas tradition either as field drives or from vehicles that have been specially rigged with open safari-style chairs and beverage coolers.
Dove Hunts Every year the dove flood South Texas in search of the endless sunflower and milo fields. Last year was unusually difficult, but '06 has already become the best dove hunting season we have seen yet. Most hunts are done over tanks as the birds come in to drink and roost, but can also be hunted out of vehicles the same way we hunt quail. At Santa Margarita we see large numbers of both Morning and Whitewing Dove.
Duck Hunts Duck hunting is a new addition to Santa Margarita in '06. Several blinds have been set up around various ponds on the ranch and we use decoys and calling to bring them. We use our trained 3 year old Black Lab ("Tanner") on these hunts, but you are welcome to bring your own dogs if you prefer. Early Teal season begins in September with Blues and Greens which continue to be common throughout the regular season along with Mottled Duck, Gadwall, Wigeon and Ringnecks.
Turkey Hunts Santa Margarita is excited to offer Spring Turkey hunts for '07. In recent years we have been nearly forced to offer these hunts because of the quality we've seen in the field. The Nueces River is covered with Oaks and flows through the ranch for 1.5 miles. These Oaks also spread into the interior of the ranch in various areas. As a result, the turkeys in the area roost on the ranch and finding them is relatively easy. We are looking forward to a successful season in Spring '07.
