Rifle & Bow Hunting

Rifle Hunting

The classic South Texas hunt involves a hunter dressed in camo, sitting in an elevated blind with a medium caliber rifle.  This situation provides the hunter with the best opportunity to see a wide variety of animals and get the drop on the animal he or she came to hunt.  SMR has the perfect set-up for this type of hunt.  All of our 15 gun blinds are full-sized corporate blinds, and all are well maintained and positioned for a successful hunt.  Most Whitetail hunters favor a rilfe in the .243 to .30-06 range.  A .30-06 is also adequate for smaller exotics (all deer species and Blackbuck Antelope), while a .300 caliber rifle is recommended for larger exotics.  The larger exotics can also be more aggressive, so an SMR guide will carry a .375 H&H Magnum for back-up when leading that type of hunt.  All hunters are welcome to spend time at the gun range, which has fixed targets from 50 to 400 yards.  SMR has a variety of hundguns and rifles from .22 to .416 caliber that hunters are welcome to use at the shooting range.

Bow Hunting

SMR caters in a unique way to bow hunters.  The ranch maintains a bow range with fixed targets at 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, and 60 yards and a tuning center capable of repairing and supertuning bows and related archery equipment.  The owners themselves are avid bow hunters and have equipped the ranch to provide a rich experience for bow hunting.  There are 10 bow blinds, ranging from tripods and ground blinds in typical South Texas brush areas to tree stands along the Nueces River.
